Located between The Links golf course and the Bramble Hill golf course and easily accessible to Fancourt residents and guests, the Fancourt Golf Academy is the perfect place to improve one's golfing skills.
Full-time resident teaching professionals offer advice and instruction backed up by the latest technology and video equipment in the studio room. Special tuition rates are always available and the professionals welcome groups, juniors or individual lessons.
The Academy is the vision of Fancourt owner, Dr Hasso Plattner who believed the Fancourt picture was not quite complete without a facility where players could improve and work on their game.
Fancourt is South Africa’s premier golf resort, featuring three highly rated Championship golf courses, where play is restricted to Members, their guests and hotel guests.
Since opening in the early 90's with just 27 Gary Player-designed holes, Fancourt’s Outeniqua and Montagu Golf Courses have matured and developed into two of the finest 18-hole parkland layouts in South Africa. A round on either is a special experience, sculpted and finished as they are, with rare attention to detail and designed with the coastal George winds in mind.
The Links Golf Course at Fancourt was added in 2000, an awe-inspiring example of magnificent design and golf-course construction, about which designer Gary Player says: “Links golf is how the game originated and at The Links we take golfers back to the roots of golf – and they can play a ‘British Open’ all of their own!”
In addition to three golf courses suited to every type of golfer, Fancourt has an exceptional golf academy that houses a Taylormade Performance Lab and state-of-the-art practice and teaching facilities, backed up by the expertise of PGA professionals. To keep golfers looking the part, there are two well-stocked pro shops, offering a wide variety of men’s and women’s golf clothing, accessories and hardware.
Fancourts three Golf Courses
Player’s design team spent months studying the classic links courses of Scotland and Ireland and then, armed with inspiration from the best that those countries had to offer, embarked on the ambitious task of recreating some of their finest holes to make a genuine links test on what was once an airfield.
The result is awe-inspiring and has elicited praise from some of the world’s finest golfers – The Links was the host venue for the 2003 Presidents Cup, which ended in an historic tie after a dramatic play-off between Tiger Woods and Ernie Els. In early 2005, it was the host venue for the Women’s World Cup of Golf, which was won by the diminutive duo of Rui Kitada and Ai Miyzato of Japan. In December 2005 The Links hosted the SAA Open, the world’s second-oldest national Open Championship.
The Links at Fancourt is a private club, with play restricted to members and their invited guests. There are limited times available to guests staying at Fancourt’s hotel – booking is essential.
There is little doubt that a round at The Links is a special experience, enhanced greatly by the expert caddies at the club. These caddies are among the best in the world and are sure to assist any standard of golfer negotiate his or her way around The Links.
When playing The Links, it is difficult to believe that one is not in Scotland or Ireland, until, that is, one notices the imposing Outeniqua mountain range that rises impressively in the background.
Montagu Golf Course
Montagu is a much celebrated parkland course and has been ranked as the number-one golf course in South Africa in the past. It has recently undergone major renovations with several holes being redesigned and has two completely new holes - the 1st and the 9th.
Play is restricted to members, their guests and resort guests, so there is ample time and space to savour the Fancourt golfing experience. It is, however, always a good idea to book in advance to ensure that you get your desired tee time.
The warm-up area, featuring a full-length range and a chipping and bunker practice area, is available to all golfers before play.
Golf carts are available for hire, weather permitting. Please note that to improve your playing enjoyment and to ensure a steady pace-of-play, it is mandatory for at least two caddies to accompany each fourball, and one caddy per twoball.
Outeniqua Golf Course
The Outeniqua golf course is one of two majestic 18-hole Parkland layouts at Fancourt. Designed by legendary Grand Slam golfer Gary Player, it is similar in character to its sibling Montagu, and its challenging design and fine conditioning will ensure an excellent test for all levels of golfers. As with all courses at Fancourt, there are a variety of tees from which to choose to play, ensuring that golfers are unlikely to ever feel overpowered by the course.
As with Montagu, play is restricted to hotel residents, members and their guests, so you are unlikely to ever feel crowded on the course, however, it is always a good idea to book in advance to ensure that you get your desired tee time.
The warm-up area, featuring a full-length range and a chipping and bunker practice area, is available to all golfers before play.

The Links Golf Course at Fancourt Ranked Number 1 in South Africa
Golf Digest South Africa has announced its rankings of the Top 100 golf courses in South Africa for 2011 - awarding The Links at Fancourt the coveted first place. The Links Golf Course leapt into top spot for the first time, improving from third position in 2010, to surpass Leopard Creek, which had been holding the crown since 2005.
This annual evaluation of all South African 18-hole golf courses are scored on a scale of one to ten, based on the golf course condition, the clubhouse facilities, as well as the service offering of establishments.
Located on the Garden Route, at the foot of the imposing Outeniqua Mountains, the Links Golf Course at the Fancourt Hotel Estate was officially opened just over 10 years ago by golf course designer Gary Player, and the owner of Fancourt, Dr. Hasso Plattner. Inspired by Scotland’s famous links courses, here Player and his design team created some of their finest holes to craft an authentic links test on what was once a featureless terrain, and the site of an airfield.
The unique layout, and pristine conditioning of The Links has resulted in its hosting of a number of International events, including the prestigious Presidents Cup in 2003, the Womans World Cup in 2005, the SA Open in 2005, The Berenberg Bank Master Seniors European Tour event in 2010.
Unique to South Africa, The Links Golf Course at Fancourt presents undulating windswept terrain and dune-style landscape, with the tees and fairways a combination of four cool season grasses. Every hole has been carefully considered to ensure that the overall balance in terms of length, position of hazards and shot values provide the ultimate test to the low handicap player, ensuring an unforgettable golf experience.
Five of the world’s most legendary golfers are Honorary Members of The Links at Fancourt: Gary Player, John Bland, Justin Rose, Retief Goosen and Ernie Els.
The Golf Digest Top 100 also rates South Africa’s best golf courses in four different categories: coastal, parkland, golf estate and bushveld. Considering the vast number of parkland golf courses found in South Africa, Fancourt is also proud of the ranking of its other two 18-hole courses, with the Montagu course moving up one place from 8th to 7th place, and the Outeniqua course included in the top courses, at 18th place.
Acknowledged as one of the leading golfing magazines in South Africa, The Golf Digest magazine has a readership of over 150 000 golf enthusiasts and is regarded as one of the ultimate guides to the world’s best ‘holes’.
