Overview
The Fairlawns Boutique Hotel and Spa opened its doors in Sandton, Johannesburg in January 1998, with the original 12 courtyard suites, the restaurant and bar.
Since then another 6 premier suites and a presidential suite, a conference centre, a large fully equipped gym and a spa have been added to this exclusive property. Once the private home of John and Anna Thacker, the current owners, the property was bought from the Little Brenthurst Trust of Oppenheimer fame, (hence the Oppenheimer Suite), and consisted of a 10 acre property with horses and stables and rolling lawns (hence the name Fairlawns). Portions of the property have unfortunately been sold off, but it has managed to retain its stately, park-like ambience with ancient trees and prolific bird-life. The external architecture is Palladian, but there are a variety of styles in the bedrooms, one to definitely suit every discerning taste.
Apart from the exquisite Highveld surroundings, which without exception seems to elicit the response “one would never say one is in Johannesburg”, the warm, homely ambience at the Fairlawns Boutique Hotel & Spa is unerringly remarked upon as is evidenced by the comments in the visitors’ book. As one visitor commented “a home away from home, only better’.
The Fairlawns Boutique Hotel & Spa in Sandton, Johannesburg, boasts highly individual, world-class, exclusive suites: Courtyard Suites, Premier Suites and a Presidential Suite. At the Fairlawns Hotel in Sandton a list of complimentary services are offered which include, but are not limited to: transfers within the Sandton district; use of the gym and steam room facilities.
The focus of the The Fairlawns Boutique Hotel & Spa, Sandton, is to provide personal, flexible service in a refined and elite establishment. A full English breakfast and continental are included in the room rate and may be enjoyed.
In winter, guests congregate around the welcoming fireplace like moths to a flame for some good old-fashioned gemutlichkeit. The bar is a fully stocked, award-winning bar.
To date, 2 merit, 3 platinum and 1 diamond award (one of only 5 National recipients) have been awarded by Diners Club "Wine list of the year" award. The Rose Terrace is open to non-residents for breakfast, lunch and dinner, seven days a week.
Fairlawns Health & Beauty Spa, Johannesburg
The Spa which is located at The Fairlawns Hotel, right in the heart of Sandton, seeks to recreate the principles of holistic healing in a pampering environment. The newly built Balinese Spa Garden, with its hydrotherapy treatments, relaxation and dining pavilions and outdoor massage areas is as close as one is going to get this side of the Indian Ocean to what we all instinctively crave – time-out to renew our batteries, get our skins to glow and our energies to flow.
Spa guests are welcome to make use of the Balinese Spa Garden, with its hydrotherapy, relaxation and dining areas. It is, however, for the exclusive use of guests who have booked treatment packages.
Dining at the Fairlawns Boutique Hotel & Spa, Sandton
All candlelit dinners at The Fairlawns Boutique Hotel can be served in either the Private Dining-Room, in the restaurant or on the terrace. In the summer, guests may request a table be set on the lawns under the stars, or near the lit fountains, a service which we are happy to provide.
A light lunch menu and room service menu are also available. In the evenings, relax with an aperitif on the tranquil terrace or sip cognac in front of the winter fire in the Colonial Bar, with its hand-carved elephant heads.
Room Types
These 20 suites are the latest addition to the hotel with 4 family interleading rooms. Again in true Fairlawns style, each room is individually decorated, echoing the origional ideas of the Courtyard and Villa suites, yet with a modern contemporary twist. The building process and day to day energy preservation was a key factor considered in the building of this new wing of the hotel.
The public area on both levels creates a cozy atmosphere with lounges and large sandstone fireplaces. A lift provides easy access to the second level and the environment is wheelchair friendly.
A journey around the world in 20 unique destination suites which allows our regular and return guests a different experience every stay.

Room Amenities
Restaurants
Dining at the five star Fairlawns Boutique Hotel & Spa is designed to be elegantly smart casual. The finer details like beautiful linen, crockery and silver cutlery are, however, an integral part of the experience. The candlelit tables and soft music give an enchantingly intimate and romantic atmosphere to the Italian influenced decor of the terrace restaurant. In the summer the venue of choice is out on the open terraces, where guests enjoy the renowned Johannesburg weather, which, like Camelot, is rarely too hot or too cold at night.
The lamplights compete with the twinkling stars to make this destination restaurant a memorable venue. The kitchen team is headed up by our Executive Chef Michael Colling and Sous Chef Calvin Stein. Chef Michael Colling has recently been indicted into the chaine des Rossiteurs and will be hosting the first Chaine gourmet dinner at the end of September 2010.
The Menu is international and prepared fresh everyday from local produce. Personalized dishes are prepared with pleasure. Our award-winning wine list complements the delicious array of seasonal dishes on offer.
Although the continental buffet section of the breakfast menu is cleared at 10h30, Guests are welcome to order breakfast whenever they please. We subscribe to the philosophy that we are here for the Guest’s convenience, and not the Guest for ours. The restaurant has now been fitted with a large reconstituted sandstone fireplace which is a perfect mood setter during the winter months.
Monthly Boutique Gourmet Wine dinners are hosted in the Terrace restaurant, wine makers and cheffing teams collaborate food and wine paring menus.
Long lazy summer time breakfasts, accompanied with a glass of bubbly, are a perfect way to start the day over weekends.
Light lunches are served wherever a guest desires – at the swimming pool, on the Terrace, in the suite or in the Restaurant. An in-suite menu is also available.
Private Dinners can be arranged in a variety of venues such as the La Scala or the more intimate Private Dinning room. The Terrace Restaurant is open to non-residents for breakfast, lunch and dinner, seven days a week, bookings essential.

A sundowner enjoyed around the sparkling pool, or on the Terrace watching the setting sun and listening to the returning flocks of birds is a truly African experience. The Fairlawns Boutique Hotel & Spa is fortunate to be able to offer its guests that priviledge while over-nighting in Johannesburg, or sojourning on business. In winter there is a roaring fire in the Bar to compensate for being in-doors.
The bar is fully stocked with a wide array of excellent wines, both local and international, and has won many awards to date. A Diners Club Diamond award (one of only 5 National recipients) and several Platinum awards for the "Wine list of the year" Annual Awards to name a few.

Conferences / Events
The popularity of the conference centre can be attributed in part to the airy, natural light which the various venues enjoy. The Cecil J Rhodes is a 16 seater horseshoe boardroom (layout) with French doors leading onto balconies which overlook the Balinese Gardens adjacent to the boardroom are the larger function venues - the de Beers and Barney Barnato rooms are located across the gardens in the conference centre and are ideal for larger groups for conferences or banquets.
