Junior Rangers Programme: kids activities

The perfect family escapes from the bustle of the city, located in the heart of the malaria-free, 'Big Five' Pilanesberg National Park and only an hour and a half's drive from Johannesburg, the Bakubung Bush Lodge offers something special for children. With various activities to take part in including game drives, bush walks, birding, picnicking and in-house entertainment, Bakubung has developed something, even more, engaging, this being the Junior Ranger's program, allowing parents to enroll their kids in a unique, educational and, most importantly, a fun experience.

Under the supervision of trained staff, parents can rest assured that their children will be well looked after while participating in a host of educational activities allowing the whole family a great getaway. Activities are geared around natural resource protection, environmental education and responsible recreation offering an exclusive opportunity to explore the Pilanesberg National Park. Activities have been created for children from the ages of 6 years old to that of 12 years old and aim to encourage an appreciation for nature, conservation and natural resources.

From learning about the history of the Pilanesberg National Park, participating in wildlife walks allowing children the opportunity to find out more about wild animals, the sounds various birds make become prominent as guides teach one what to listen for as well as that of the purpose of the various plant life around the lodges.

Once activities have been completed, kids are presented with activity badges and stickers. Once they have completed all 8 activities and have therefore collected all 8 activity stickers, they will participate in a Junior Ranger pledge ceremony whereby the Bakubung Junior Rangers are given a certificate portraying that they are now a part of the resource protection, environmental education and responsible recreation initiative.

We are just back in the UK after our visit to South Africa, where we very much enjoyed a 4 night stay at Bakubung Lodge, with my sister (who stayed with me there in January 2012) and my husband on his first ever visit. He was mighty impressed by everything.

We had a great welcome as returning guests and were in fact recognized so got a very personal and warm welcome at Reception and from the game Ranger Jarred who also remembered us from January. My sister is disabled and so some special requests were made – like always getting to go on a Game viewing vehicle with STEPS, and this was always arranged. Much appreciated. The wheelchair was ready and waiting at reception on arrival – a huge asset so many thanks for that too.

We were NOT INFORMED at Reception on arrival that guests must BOOK a table for Dinner, selecting the time you want to eat, so on our first night – a busy Friday, we found all tables full and had to wait till 8.30 p.m.. It was never an issue in January as there was enough space when using outside and inside if you preferred, but in winter with mostly inside getting used it did present a problem coming into dinner on return from our first Game Drive. Please just make sure, Reception have this oversight pointed out to them.

The disabled room was again fine although we had an on-g0ing problem with the flushing system on the toilet but although reported on the Friday night I think weekend maintenance only saw the problem getting a minor adjustment so it remained an irritant throughout our stay. Supplies to the bedroom were erratic – sometimes 1 Five roses tea bag and 5 Rooiboos which if you don’t drink Rooiboos is a problem and toiletry supplies were hit and miss – twice having no shower gel late at night when you came to take a shower- so some improvements here would not go amiss. Maybe, again, weekend staff are not quite so accurate as the regular weekday staff.

However, all in all, our stay was excellent, the competence, and skill of the Game Ranger Jarred made for memorable Game Drives and he is to be congratulated on his knowledge, skill and customer relations – first class.

I will most certainly return with my sister and it could well be January 2013. My sister is about to move to a Retirement Village in Joburg so I guess I will be out by January to find her safely settled in and in need of a change of scene and Bakubung would instantly spring to mind.

Will be in touch again soon.

Thank you for your assistance in booking this accommodation and please update Bakubung on my comments.

Kind regards.

Mrs Jennifer Forbes

We had a very nice stay at Bakubung together with our family from Johannesburg and kids. The game drives were superb and we saw so much wildlife during our time there.

The room in which we stayed had two double beds and still had space for comfortable sitting and relaxing. Our grandkids were able to stay in the same room with us. The Lodge has an outdoor pool and playground for kids.

What a nice holiday we enjoyed. Bakubung is a bit of a mix between a Hotel and a Lodge: one is surrounded by the wildlife of the Pilanesberg National Park but one has all the comforts of a hotel. We enjoyed our game drives where we saw a lot of animals, and the food was delicious.

As I was SO IMPRESSED by my stay at the Lodge, I did want my comments to be passed on to the Bush Lodge by some means or another, so I am now going to attempt to tell you about my findings and would ask you please to pass these comments onto the Bush Lodge direct.

My sister and I stayed at Bakubung from Jan 27th – 31st. My sister is disabled and on checking in she was walking with a walking aid. This was “noticed” by Reception albeit my sister did not come with me to the Reception desk whilst I did the checking in. When I quoted my Booking Ref. at the check in counter, they found my booking file and noticed the room we had been alloted and immediately said to me, you are booked into a room which is upstairs, so we are changing this to a downstair room. That occurred without any request from me for a “convenient room” to meet my sister’s needs. I drove round to the parking area near out room where help was waiting to unpack our car. This gentleman assisted my sister and immediately said, you will find these paths so much easier with a Wheelchair and off he went to Reception and brought back the Lodge Wheelchair. I was mighty impressed!! - and indeed it did most certainly help to get my sister from one part of the Lodge to another with the wheelchair. I discovered later that in fact we had been put in the wheelchair friendly room, (room 301) so that room had all the facilities in the bathroom too to assist someone with a disability. It was first rate.

In addition, we received incredible help at the Wildlife Service Office, who made sure my sister was assisted onto the Game Viewing vehicles each afternoon and I would very much like to compliment all the Rangers, but in particular, special mention must be given to Jared who was tremendously enthusiastic, knowledgeable and had a superb manner with the guests. Many compliments to him.

Our Game drives were incredible and we had sighting RIGHT ON THE ROAD, of leopard, lions. Elephants and rhinos and also had a excellent sighting of Black Rhino. What more could you ask for.

I most certainly will return to the Pilansberg and without doubt to Bakubung.

Please would you be so kind to pass these compliments to Bakubung Bush Lodge and let me know that you have done so, as I am most keen for them to get the praise they are clearly entitled to.

Many thanks,

Mrs Jennifer Forbes
