Sanctuary Retreats - Game Lodges Hotels (0)
Sanctuary Retreats launched its first luxury camp, Sanctuary Olonana, in Kenya when they started operating. Sanctuary Retreats soon spread out across Africa, opening lodges in Zambia, Botswana, Tanzania and Uganda, as well as tented camping across East Africa. Sanctuary Retreats now also offers expedition cruising in China, Egypt and the Galapagos Islands. Each Sanctuary property has the same aim: to allow guests to have a real experience, and enjoy a more natural kind of luxury.
Sanctuary Luxury Lodges & Safari Camps
Walk with Maasai warriors in Kenya, glide down rivers in canoes alongside hippos and crocodiles in Zambia, get face to face with mountain gorillas in Uganda, sip a sundowner while watching the set over the endless plains of the Serengeti in Tanzania, even walk with elephants in the Botswana bush. With Sanctuary Retreats, anything is possible on an African safari.
The group's award-winning lodges and camps are set in some of the most beautiful and unspoilt areas of Africa. Combine these luxurious, individual properties with expert guides, and Sanctuary Retreats provides an unforgettable way to experience the captivating heart of Africa with a safari holiday.
The properties are small, exclusive and private with extraordinarily high levels of service. All are built and designed with the utmost respect for the environment and many can be packed away without leaving the slightest impression on the pristine areas where they are located.
Highly trained and deeply knowledgeable, Sanctuary's guides introduce guests to the wonders of some of the most magnificent parts of Africa, including private concessions in the Okavango Delta in Botswana, and Bwindi’s Impenetrable Forest in Uganda
Safari Lodges & Camps in Zambia
The varied wildlife and wilderness makes Zambia the ideal choice for a safari holiday. Experience the ultimate Zambia safari with Sanctuary Retreats - the luxury safari lodges and authentic tented camps are located in the heart of three of Zambia's national parks: Mosi-oa-Tunya (Victoria Falls), the Lower Zambezi and the South Luangwa.
Sanctuary Chichele Presidential Lodge, South Luangwa
This hilltop lodge with just ten suites is found in Zambia's vast South Luangwa National Park. Home to probably the highest concentration of hippos in the world, as well as lions, leopards and elephants, South Luangwa is famous for its walking safaris.
Sanctuary Puku Ridge Camp, South Luangwa
Sanctuary Puku Ridge is an intimate camp with seven tents. Named after the Puku antelope that grazes on the floodplains below, this traditional safari camp is perched on an escarpment in a remote part of the South Luangwa National Park.
Sanctuary Sussi & Chuma, Livingstone
Just a short drive away from the world famous Victoria Falls, Sanctuary Sussi & Chuma is built on a dramatic bend in the Zambezi. The main lodge includes twelve tree houses connected by stilted wooden walkways. There are also two luxurious houses available, ideal for family groups.
Sanctuary Zambezi Kulefu Camp, Lower Zambezi
Sanctuary Zambezi Kulefu Camp is a traditional tented camp, located in the gloriously remote Lower Zambezi National Park. Sanctuary Zambezi Kulefu Camp's seven spacious tents line the banks of the Zambezi, and the camp is open annually from mid-April to mid-November.
Safari Lodges & Camps in Botswana
The two most important areas for game viewing in Botswana are within the Okavango Delta and Chobe National Park. The properties are located there in secluded and pristine wildlife-rich areas that maximise game viewing opportunities. It is highly recommended that a Botswana safari holiday includes a stay at two or more of the camps in the Okavango Delta as they each provide such different experiences. This is often combined with a stay at Sanctuary Chobe Chilwero, a luxury lodgde with the only full service spa on the Botswana safari circuit.
Sanctuary Baines' Camp, Okavango Delta
Sanctuary Baines' Camp is located on a huge private concession bordering the Moremi Game Reserve in the Okavango Delta, home to some of the most spectacular wildlife on Earth. This is Sanctuary's smallest and most intimate camp, with only five luxurious suites.
Sanctuary Chief's Camp, Okavango Delta
The twelve luxury bush pavilions at Sanctuary Chief's Camp are tucked away in the Mombo Concession, part of the world-renowned Moremi Game Reserve. This area is known as the 'predator capital of Africa' and is also home to large herds of elephant and buffalo, making Sanctuary Chief's the ideal place to experience African wildlife at close hand.
Sanctuary Chobe Chilwero, Chobe National Park
Sanctuary Chobe Chilwero borders Chobe National Park, home to the world's largest remaining population of elephants. This is an incredibly luxurious lodge with just 15 guest cottages, as well as the only full spa on the Botswana safari circuit.
Sanctuary Stanley's Camp, Okavango Delta
Sanctuary Stanley's is a classic tented camp with just eight tents built around an imposing sausage tree on a private concession overlooking the Okavango floodplains. The area around the camp changes with the seasons - from lush green when the rain flows down from the Angolan highlands to dry savannah when the Kalahari Desert tightens its grip.
Safari Lodges & Camps in Kenya
The tented safari camp in Kenya is located at the heart of Africa's big game country, the Masai Mara. With incredible game viewing, the Mara is the perfect choice for a Kenya safari holiday.
Sanctuary Olonana, Masai Mara
Sanctuary Olonana is an award-winning tented camp on a private stretch of the Mara River, at the foot of the impressive Siria Escarpment close to where the famous last scene from "Out of Africa" was filmed. Located close to the border with Tanzania, the game concentration is high - and during the annual wildebeest migration, the action happens right on the camp's doorstep.
Safari Lodges & Camps in Tanzania
The intimate tented camps have been built in the most stunning locations for a Tanzania safari. What better way to discover the country's epic game viewing and landscapes than with a safari holiday exploring the Serengeti and Tarangire National Parks?
Sanctuary Kusini, Serengeti
Sanctuary Kusini is the only permanent tented camp in the southern Serengeti and provides extraordinary views of the plains below. Set on a rocky outcrop, or kopje, the twelve tented bush camp is so remote that it needs its own airstrip.
Sanctuary Swala, Tarangire
Sanctuary Swala is located in an exceptionally private section of Tarangire National Park, offering visitors a luxurious and very exclusive safari experience. The camp, which has twelve tents, has recently been completely rebuilt to the highest eco-friendly standards.
Safari Lodges & Camps in Uganda
Bwindi National Park is an area of awe-inspiring biodiversity with over 200 species of birds, butterflies and trees - the perfect choice for a holiday to Uganda. It is the elusive Mountain Gorilla that is the park's main star - and with half of the world's population living here, our camp in Bwindi offers adventurous travellers the chance of a once-in-a-lifetime holiday tracking the elusive and endangered gorillas of Uganda.
Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp, Bwindi Impenetrable Forest
Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp is nestled deep inside Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in southwest Uganda. This eight tent camp is one of the most remote and atmospheric in Africa.
Imagine standing in the giant footsteps of an elephant or touching the bark of a tree where only minutes earlier a leopard had scratched it. Imagine cocktails and canapés as the sun sets over the Luangwa River, hundreds of snorting hippos providing the background music before sitting down to a three course candlelit dinner served under the stars, with white linen, the finest silverware and the surrounding area filled with lanterns. Imagine experiencing all of this before returning to your luxury tent for a night under canvas. Now, with the launch of the group's first luxury walking safari camp, all of this becomes reality!
The concentration of wildlife around camp is simply awe-inspiring. On the plains zebra, antelope, buffalo and puku congregate in vast numbers alongside endemic species such as the Thornicroft's giraffe, Crawshay's zebra and Cookson’s wildebeest. Predators such as lion, leopard and the elusive wild dog are often seen tracking their quarry and the rivers and tributaries are teeming with hippo, elephant and crocodile. A safari by foot also ensures that one can see many of the 400 species of birds found in the area as well as the rarely seen but fascinating “Little Five” (rhino beetle, buffalo weaver, elephant shrew, leopard tortoise and ant lion).
Sanctuary Zebra Plains is located in a particularly beautiful and untouched area of the South Luangwa, perched on a sand bank at the confluence of the Luangwa and Chibembe Rivers. There are just four traditional tents – two doubles and two twins. The camp accommodates a maximum of six guests, allowing for an intimate exploration of the South Luangwa. All tents have real beds, campaign furniture, mosquito nets, en suite facilities and flush toilets. Water for al fresco showers is mixed to your preferred temperature by a tent attendant. The main mess tent has a dining area although most of the meals will be served in the open in carefully selected vantage points. There is also a small library and bar area.
Garth Hovell, widely regarded as one of Zambia’s most highly respected guides with almost twenty years of experience, leads walks twice a day. One morning you might wander along a river bank, observing elephants before canoeing across to a large island across from camp to get up close to plains game. Later that day you may choose to explore nearby Zebra Plains where buffalo, eland and zebra gather in large herds on the open savannah, a rarity in the wooded terrain. Another day your destination might be the Changwa Channel, featured in David Attenborough’s “Life” series and home to one of the largest hippo populations on earth.
This is a seasonal camp operating from June to October each year opening for the first time on June 1, 2011. Sanctuary Zebra Plains has been designed to leave the lowest possible carbon footprint and will be packed up completely each year with no trace that it was ever there between seasons.
In order to fully explore the South Luangwa, guests will spend three nights at Sanctuary Zebra Plains with set departures on Monday or Thursday. We suggest combining a walking safari with a stay at Sanctuary Puku Ridge Camp or Sanctuary Chichele Presidential Lodge, also in the park. These permanent properties offer morning and evening game drives, the perfect complement to Sanctuary Zebra Plains.
