In spring, the jacarada trees which line the streets of Pretoria change the color of the city to deep lilac. Jacardanda trees were imported from Rio de Janeiro, Brasil, in 1888 to Pretoria. Today, some 70,000 jacaranda trees line the avenues of South Africa’s administrative capital. Pretoria is also one of South Africa’s foremost academic centres.
