Demographics of Johannesburg
Johannesburg's population is 3.2 million (Census 2001). Johannesburg's residents earn between them a total income of R28 billion per annum.
Johannesburg is the provincial capital of Gauteng ( South Africa), the most densely populated province, with a population of close to nine million. The 2001 census results show that men outnumber women in Gauteng, but only marginally: 4,45-million men live in the province of Gauteng, compared with 4,4-million women. (Source: Statistics SA) The demographics of Johannesburg will, for years to come, continue to reflect the skewed heritage of apartheid. At the end of the apartheid era, in 1994, average annual per capita income in Randburg, one of the wealthier "white" areas, was R53 927, whereas that in Soweto was R8 358.
