One&Only Cape Town Resort launched Lalela Project Gallery this Heritage Day
Victoria and Alfred Waterfront, Cape Town / South Africa
On Heritage Day, 24.92012, the inspirational youth-focused Lalela Project launched its first stand-alone gallery at Cape Town hotel’s One&Only Cape Town Resort with a celebrity-studded artwork auction.
This Cape Town based program focuses on providing educational arts to youth at risk, sparking creative thinking and awakening entrepreneurial spirit will showcase a collection of works co-produced by themselves and a number of South African sporting, arts and cultural luminaries.
The initial exhibition in the new space at the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront features the results of some of the ‘Heart Mapping’ exercises undertaken by students of Lalela Project with numerous South African celebrities. Heart Mapping involves understanding and charting the four metaphorical chambers of a candidate’s heart, during which the dreams, hopes, fears and challenges he or she faces becomes evident.
As part of the launch event for Lalela Project’s One&Only Cape Town space, some of the children were teamed with local celebrities for a Heart Mapping session. The result from these sharing sessions is a series of colourful, carefully rendered, artworks featuring the Heart Maps of inspirational South African including the likes of sports greats Mark Boucher, Shaun Thomson, Bruce Fordyce and media and entertainment personalities such as Eric Miyeni, David Kramer, Johnny Clegg and Yvonne Chaka Chaka.
Numerous other well-known figures’ Heart Maps, as interpreted by Lalela Project youth participants, will also be on show including One&Only Cape Town and Kerzner Holdings founder Sol Kerzner. But perhaps the most exciting Heart Map inclusion is that of Nelson Mandela, which was compiled though research done by the students. Madiba’s Heart Map will remain as a permanent exhibition piece at the gallery space.
One&Only Cape Town is excited to be fostering creative entrepreneurialism for a growing group of Cape Peninsula youth. The permanent gallery space is situated on the first floor mezzanine of One&Only Cape Town and is open 7 days a week.
