Rovos Rail – The Most Luxurious Train in the World

Rovos Rail, Southern Africa - The Most Luxurious Train in the World

Knowns as “the most luxurious train in the world”, Rovos Rail in South Africa has gained international acclaim for its outstanding accommodation and public spaces, superior service and dining as well as off-train sightseeing and activities. Established in 1989, Rovos Rail brings to life the romantic nostalgia of yesteryear’s fine carriages and slow journeys through spectacular African landscapes to exotic locations.

The Pride of Africa, as the train is aptly named, is everything that is quintessentially luxurious accentuated with exquisite wood paneling and Edwardian features. The Royal Suites, each of which take up half a carriage, are spacious and elegant, measuring approximately 16 square metres in size. Each suite has its own private lounge area and full bathroom with a Victorian bath and separate shower. The Deluxe Suites, approximately 11 square metres have a lounge area and en-suite bathroom with shower. The Pullman Suites, approximately 7 square metres are equipped with a comfortable sofa-seat during the day, with an en-suite bathroom with shower.

All train safaris depart from the elegant Capital Park Station in Pretoria. There are several routes lasting from 24 hours to a fortnight within Southern Africa, from South Africa to Namibia and Dar Es Salaam. Take the popular weekly departure 48-hour journey to Cape Town from the Highveld to the Great Karoo and pass through historic towns and sights such as The Big Hole in Kimberley. Or see the bush from a completely unique perspective on a journey to the Kruger Park that incorporates golfing and game viewing. Landscapes vary from the untouched game reserves of Mpumalanga to the majestic Victoria Falls, the arid landscapes of Namibia’s deserts to the lush canefields of Kwa Zulu Natal and the verdant Garden Route on the Cape South Coast. Every two years, Rovos Rail runs a Cape to Cairo route, first introduced in 2008 and is scheduled to run again in 2012.
