Newlands Brewery – Sipping on History

Newlands Brewery

Newlands Brewery

Some of the well known tourist attractions in Cape Town including Table Mountain, Lions Head, V&A Waterfront, Camps Bay and the Winelands are well known.  But little do some of the tourists know that there are a few hidden gems in Cape Town to escape the crowds and save on your holiday budget.

Sipping on History

Sipping on History

Beat the New Years Blues and visit the Newlands Brewery which has been nestled on the banks of the Liesbeek River for nearly 200 Years.  The Newlands Brewery is the second largest brewery by volume in the world, and one of a handful still in a residential area. Pumping out nearly 1,5 million beers a day to satisfy the thirst of the South African population, this is well worth a visit to see and experience where beer is made and comes from.

The story of beer began on the banks of the Liesbeek River in 1958.  Letterstedt built the original mariendahl brewery in Newlands, that still stands today, the warehouse is relatively small but can move 90 trucks in a day.  The brewery sends the beer to depots located in Belville, Ottery and to 40 countries world wide.

At the Brewery there is a tour that lasts an hour-long of its rich history.  Visitors can truly experience and appreciate the fruits of its Labour and at the end.  The tour concludes in the Jacob Lettersedt Pub, where freshly brewed beer is served icy-cold, and guests can enjoy two free drinks on the house.

The Newlands Brewrey Tour is well worth a visit and at R30 per person is a must on a post-holiday budget. The Tour runs three times a day at 10:00, 12:00 and 14:00 as well as on Saturdays at 10:00. Booking is essential, for more information or to make a booking, call (021) 658 7511

We have organized a 15 day Madagascar Railroad Trip in which you will be able to meet the local population, enjoy time with the train crew and tour guides who are only too eager to share their knowledge of this gem of an Island with you.
The journey begins with your arrival at the Antananarivo airport in Madagascar.  Over 15 days the journey will take you through cities, towns, villages that cover Antananarivo, Moramanga, Tamatave, Ambatondrazaka, Ambositra, Fianarantsoa, Ambalavao, Manakara, Ranomafana and many more special places.

Some of the spectacular highlights to look forward to while visiting these places include Andasibe National Park, reptile farms in Marozevo, night walks in Andasibe and the very popular Ranomafana National Park which is well known for its vast wildlife and nature.

What makes this Railroad trip so special is the journey taken upon them, these trains hold a special part of history in travel within Madagascar and offers a different and unique holiday experience. The adventure is complemented by three trains, all with a different background and heritage to them, they include:

La Micheline ‘Viko Viko’

This train is a revolutionary invention of the 30′s and there are only 2 left in the world, one in a museum and one still running in Madagascar. It has an an average speed of 50 km/h and is a real gem as it has been refurbished thanks to its carefully preserved origin and genuine parts. An astonishing fact is that the train actually runs on rubber wheels along the track, the only kind in the world. Some other features of this unique rare train are its wicker chairs, bamboo flooring, a corner bar within the train and a FCE sound system and so much more.
