KwaZulu-Natal Sharksboard – Umhlanga, Durban

KwaZulu Natal Sharks Board

KwaZulu Natal Sharks Board

KwaZulu-Natal has the only coastline in South Africa that is protected by shark safety gear. The KwaZulu-Natal Sharks Board in Umhlanga, South Africa, maintains shark safety gear at 38 localities and is the only institute of its kind in the world, with offerings of  safe bathing to tourists and locals alike while also conducting research into the history of shark life as well as offering a public education programme.

The main operations for the Sharks board is:

- Protects bathers against shark attack
- Researches shark behaviour, feeding and breeding
- Offers early morning boat trips out to sea to observe staff at work checking the shark safety gear, as well as providing an excellent chance of spotting a variety of marine life
-  Educates tourists and scholars with dynamic audio-visual shows and dissections of sharks

The KwaZulu-Natal Sharks Board has been successfully protecting the province’s bathing beaches from shark attack for more than 40 years. They have done extensive research into bather protection, with as little impact on the environment as possible, is respected world-wide and there is a continuing exchange of information with overseas countries, notably Australia as well as USA and other countries experiencing shark incidents as well as their will to gain more knowledge

The KwaZulu-Natal Board also plays a significant role in supporting the tourism industry that has developed around the annual Sardine Run, relaying information and running an information hotline (083 913 9495) as the shoals make their way up the South Coast.  The Sardine Run which usually happens between May and July every year,  affords visitors the opportunity of viewing first hand, the vast shoals of fish and accompanying predators such as seabirds, dolphins, gamefish and of course sharks.

Audio-Visual Presentation and Shark Dissection

The public and learner groups are encouraged to visit the complex at 1a Herrwood Drive, Umhlanga.  A large screen audio-visual presentation draws the audience in the world of the shark and the role the KZNSB plays in keeping the protected beaches free from shark attack. Duration 25 minutes.  In an effort to bring science to learners and visitors in an informal setting, the Sharks Board has made a shark dissection part of the whole learning experience.

Boat Trips

The Sharks Board gives members of the public an opportunity to go out to sea and watch the shark safety gear being checked in the early morning.  The Tour Boat leaves Wilson’s Wharf at 06h30 and proceeds out to sea and joins the working craft to view the shark net experience.  The skipper keeps the passengers fully informed as to the activities they are watching, as well as drawing their attention to any opportunistic viewing of other marine life and seabirds.  This two hour trip is an extraordinary experience to see Durban’s beachfront in the early morning light with the sun just rising over the ocean.

Durban Beachfront, KwaZulu-Natal

Durban Beachfront

Durban Beachfront

The Durban Beachfront today still has many interesting aspects that are predominantly from the Seventies with an array of colourful architecture lining the shore to the ladies selling Zulu trinkets alongside cheap Chinese toys on blankets under umbrellas, the beachfront is the place to experience the real Durban.

Visitors can walk along the beachfront all the way from the pastel monstrosity that is the Suncoast Casino to the African wonderland where uShaka Marine World is located.  This walk itself is filled with Durban legends – from the windswept Battery Beach to the surfing hotspot North Beach and the ever-popular Addington.

There are a few things that simply have to be done if you want to experience the Durban beachfront in all its glory:

- Eat a quarter pineapple dusted with chilli. It might sound odd, but it’s a local delicacy and really quite delicious once you get used to the burny-sweet sensation.

- Eat a soft serve ice cream. Preferably straight after the chilli-dusted pineapple, to ease your burning tongue. This should be a cheap pink and white striped ice cream, served in a luminous orange cone and bought from a broken-down old ice cream truck still playing the song you grew up with.

- Go on the cable car at the Durban Fun Fair. It might look a little treacherous, but it’s such a fun way to see the whole of the Durban skyline spread out below you.

- Feed the pigeons. Ever since the boardwalk used to house the aquarium, pigeons have flocked here to be fed crumbs by little kids and old folks alike. It’s a tradition.

- Buy a Zulu trinket. Whether it’s a piece of beaded jewellery, a little African doll, a shwe-shwe skirt or an intricately made Zulu hat, make sure you walk away with a memento of your time in Durbs.

Look out, too, for the brightly-coloured rickshaws, which have become a landmark of what’s known as the “Golden Mile” of Durban’s Beachfront. The dress of their drivers, colourful beads and tall, often very elaborate, head-dresses, is a curious mixture of Indian and African influences.
