FANCOURT GOLF & SPA ESTATE, George

Nine greens at Outeniqua to be resurfaced

The management of Fancourt Hotel and Golf Estate have announced that they will be closing holes 3 to 11 on one of their premier parkland courses, Outeniqua, for resurfacing of the greens.

The nine affected holes will be closed to golfers from 18 April, with the scheduled reopening due on 28 September 2006.

Director of Golf at Outeniqua and Montagu Jason Totos explained the rationale behind the closure: “We have felt for some time now that the greens on Outeniqua are no longer in keeping with the high standards of Fancourt and that we would need to take this radical step to return them to their former glory. While they are still certainly playable, we felt that the time was right to improve them substantially before they deteriorated to an unacceptable level.”

The greens will be completely resurfaced with the same strain of Bent grass (A1A4) that has been used very successfully on the new greens complexes of the redesigned Montagu course. There are no plans to do any major reshaping work on the closed nine holes, however, since the opportunity presents itself, there will be general maintenance and renovation work carried out where necessary.

Fancourt prides itself in the wide variety of golfing choice available to its visitors and members. With this in mind, rather than losing an entire 18-hole course during the winter months, management has decided to keep the remaining holes open for play, giving golfers a choice of 27 holes if one includes the Montagu course – in effect Montagu and two composite18-hole courses.

Resort General Manager of Fancourt, Ingrid Diesel commented: “Obviously it is never ideal to have to close any part of a course, but we feel that this is the best way to return the course to pristine condition. Fancourt is known world-wide for its high-quality golf courses and we have a duty to our members and guests to ensure that they have the very best playing experience at all times.”
